Gravel Driveway Repair & Restoration in Southwestern Ontario

A gravel driveway doesn't fail all at once — it fails a little every spring. Water takes the fine material out of the centre, the ruts get deeper, washboarding builds up across the surface, and by the third year you're driving around potholes. A Harley power rake is the machine that reverses that, and most tired driveways need one instead of a rebuild.

How a Harley power rake fixes a driveway

A power rake — a Harley rock rake on our compact track loaders — is a spinning toothed drum that cuts down into the gravel and pulls it back level as the machine moves. It drags loose stone out of the shoulders and feather it across the low lanes, buries ruts and potholes from underneath, breaks up and levels the corrugated washboarding that builds along the wheel tracks, and rebuilds the crown in the middle of the drive so water runs to the sides instead of ponding in the ruts.

The reason it works so well on a driveway that's merely tired is that most of the stone you need is already there — it's just in the wrong place. Raking redistributes it, so a top-up load goes where it's genuinely thin instead of being spread over a surface that was never level to begin with.

What a full restoration includes

We start by walking the drive and reading where it's failing — the crown, the shoulders, the drainage at the road and at the house. Edges and encroaching vegetation are cleared back, then the rake works the surface to depth in overlapping passes. Low sections and potholes are filled with matching stone, the whole drive is re-raked and re-crowned, and it's compacted and tracked off so the surface sets before the next rain.

For longer drives and farm yards we work in sections and keep one lane open as we go, so you're never locked off the property for the day.

When raking isn't enough

If the base underneath has gone — soft, pumping subgrade, a drive that sinks every spring no matter what you add, or standing water that has nowhere to go — raking only hides it for a season. Those need the Kubota skid steer: pull the failed material, rebuild and compact a proper base, re-establish grade and drainage, then lay and rake new stone. We'll tell you which one your driveway actually needs during the estimate, because raking a driveway that needs a rebuild is money wasted.
