Fertilizer Applications in Elgin, Oxford & Norfolk Counties

A well-fed lawn handles heat, foot traffic, and drought better than one running on depleted soil. Fertilizer gives your turf the nutrients it needs to grow thick, stay green, and resist weeds and disease. But timing and rate matter more than most people realize — too much fertilizer at the wrong time causes more problems than it solves. We apply the right product at the right rate in the right window for Southwestern Ontario growing conditions.

Our recommended program

For most lawns in Elgin, Oxford, and Norfolk Counties, we recommend four applications per season:

  • Early spring (April): a balanced fertilizer to break dormancy and support early green-up without pushing excessive top growth.
  • Late spring (May to June): a slow-release nitrogen application to sustain colour and density through the growing season.
  • Late summer (August): a lighter application to support recovery from summer stress and prepare the lawn for its fall growth surge.
  • Fall (September to October): a high-potassium winterizer to strengthen roots and improve cold hardiness heading into winter.

Why timing matters

Cool-season grasses — the dominant turf type in Southwestern Ontario — grow most aggressively in spring and fall. Fertilizing during these windows feeds the grass when it can actually use the nutrients.

Fertilizing heavily in mid-summer pushes leaf growth when the plant is already stressed by heat. The result is a lawn that looks green for a week and then burns out. Our schedule avoids that by matching application rates to the plant's natural growth cycle.

What we don't do

We don't apply fertilizer to frozen or saturated ground. We don't over-apply to force colour. And we don't apply products that your lawn doesn't need. If a soil test shows your phosphorus levels are already adequate, we won't add more. If your lawn is healthy and dense, we'll tell you to save the money on a fifth application. Honest recommendations keep your lawn healthy and your costs reasonable.
