Grass Cutting & Lawn Care in Elgin, Oxford & Norfolk Counties

Mowing is the most common property job there is, which is also why it's the most commonly missed. Anyone can cut grass the day they feel like it — the value is in a crew that shows up on the same day every week, cuts the lawn in a way that makes it thicker, and leaves the edges and hard surfaces clean behind them.

What every visit includes

Every scheduled visit is the same routine: mow the lawn, string trim along fences, posts, beds and walls where the mower can't reach, edge the beds and hard surfaces, and blow the driveway, walks and porch clear of clippings. We then walk the property before we leave and note anything that needs your attention — a low spot that's holding water, a bed that's due for mulch, a sprinkler head that's been knocked.

Mowing that actually makes the lawn better

Most lawn problems in this region come from cutting too short and with a dull blade. We mow high — normally around three inches, higher through summer heat and drought — because deeper roots shade out crabgrass and survive dry spells. Blades are sharpened and balanced on a schedule, so the grass is cut cleanly instead of shredded and bleached at the tip. We alternate the mowing direction visit to visit, which stops the turf laying down in one grain and gives you the stripe.

Clippings are mulched back into the lawn where they're short enough to disappear — free nitrogen and moisture — and bagged when the grass has come up long, when there's thatch to pull, or when you'd rather not have them tracked into the house.

Weekly or bi-weekly?

Most clients run weekly from May through early October, which is what keeps the lawn looking deliberate rather than merely short. Bi-weekly works on lower-growth properties, shaded lawns, and larger acreage where the grass doesn't surge — the tradeoff is a heavier cut each visit, so we raise the deck further and bag more often. During a hot, dry stretch we cut less often and higher still, and we'll tell you when the lawn has gone dormant rather than push a schedule onto stressed turf.
